Turkey's stock market opens up 2.5% in first session after runoff election
GDANSK, May 29 (Reuters) -Turkey's benchmark BIST-100 index .XU100 opened 2.54% higher on the first trading day after President Tayyip Erdogan secured a victory in the country's presidential election, extending his increasingly authoritarian rule into a third decade.
Erdogan extended his two decades in power in Sunday's election, winning a mandate to pursue increasingly authoritarian policies that have polarised Turkey and strengthened its position as a regional military power.
The banking sub-index .XBANK opened 1.38% higher.
The benchmark index was up 2.28% at 0747 GMT, while the banking sub-index rose 1.30%.
Turkey's benchmark BIST-100 index has dropped 14.8% since the start of the year.
The Istanbul bourse index had notched 3.45% rise on the last trading day before the runoff election.
Shares of Turkish defense electronics company Aselsan ASELS.IS and real estate investment trust Emlak Konut REIT <EKGYO.IS were among the best performers on BIST-100 index, rising between 5.7% and 5.5%.
Turkey's Anadolu Efes AEFES.IS and Fenerbahce Futbol FENER.IS were at the bottom of the BIST-100 main index, down 3% and 4.4% respectively at 0708 GMT.
Turkish assets fell sharply after first round of the elections, in which Erdogan defied expectations and secured just under the 50% threshold needed to win outright, scoring a lead over opposition rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
