Zloty weaker ahead of rates decision

WARSAW, June 6 (Reuters) -The Polish zloty eased on Tuesday after extending a two-year high a day earlier, while other central European currencies held onto recent gains amid positive market sentiment.
Poland's Monetary Policy Council is set to announce its rates decision later in the day, with analysts polled by Reuters unanimously saying they will be kept on hold.
"Kind of a correction I would say. Over a long period now we had a rather firming trend for the zloty and the region," a Warsaw-based trader said.
A positive trade balance, good sentiment globally and a risk-on mode among investors were generally supportive for the Polish currency, the trader said.
The zloty EURPLN= had slipped 0.30% on the euro to 4.4905 by 1005 GMT, heading for its first correction this month. On Monday it had extended its two-year high to 4.47.
"The zloty appears to be exceptionally resilient to any market attempts at its weakening, helped by the relatively high interest rate differential against the euro and relatively low volatility in foreign markets," Santander Bank Polska economists wrote in a note.
They noted the Polish currency's strength is helpful in bringing down inflation faster and is thus favoured by Poland's central bank (NBP).
On the flipside, the economists pointed to recent NBP surveys as indicating that the profitability threshold for Polish exports is now near the 4.30 level, limiting the room for the zloty's further growth without significantly hitting the economy's competitiveness.
Elsewhere, the Hungarian forint EURHUF= and Czech crown EURCZK= remained largely flat after firming in recent days.
"The forint remains at the 369 level, as the region remains unmoved, with the Ukrainian dam blast in the early hours of this morning having no impact on regional currency markets," Hungarian lender MBH Bank analysts wrote in a note.
