Adds detail on gas transit

MOSCOW, June 14 (Reuters) -The governor of a region in western Russia said on Friday that Ukraine had shelled several settlements including the town of Sudzha, the last operational trans-shipping point for Russian gas exports to Europe via Ukraine.

Alexei Smirnov, acting governor of the Kursk region, made no mention of any damage to the gas infrastructure on his Telegram channel though he said two people were treated for injuries at a Sudzha hospital.

He also said that a residential house was destroyed as the result of the shelling in the area, located about nine km (five miles) from the border with Ukraine.

State-controlled Gazprom GAZP.MM, which has a monopoly on Russian gas exports via pipelines, said earlier on Friday that it expected exports via Sudzha to amount to 42.4 million cubic metres for the day, broadly steady for the past few months.

Russian gas supplies to Europe have plummeted since the start of what Russia calls a special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022.

Russia supplied a total of about 63.8 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas to Europe by various routes in 2022, according to Gazprom data and Reuters calculations. The volume declined by 55.6% to 28.3 bcm last year.

Russia also exports natural gas through pipelines to Europe via Turkey and in the form of seaborne liquefied natural gas (LNG) on tankers.
