Fujitec chairman says activist shareholder Oasis defamed him
Adds Fujitec board decision to oust chairman

TOKYO, March 28 (Reuters) -The new board of elevator maker Fujitec Co Ltd 6406.T voted on Tuesday to oust chairman Takakazu Uchiyama, in another win for activist shareholder Oasis Management that has long called for his removal.
Last month, Oasis, a Hong Kong-based hedge fund with a 17% stake in Fujitec, scored a major success at an extraordinary shareholders meeting where three outside directors were replaced with four new ones nominated by the fund, marking a rare victory for shareholder activism in Japan.
The newly formed board on Tuesday ousted Uchiyama and cut all contracts with him, Fujitec said, declining to comment on the reasons.
Oasis, Fujitec's biggest shareholder, has been critical of Uchiyama and his family for what the fund alleged was exerting undue influence on the company.
Before he was ousted on Tuesday, Uchiyama said he would file a defamation lawsuit next month against Oasis Management.
Speaking at a news conference, he alleged that Oasis had defamed him and his family by groundlessly attacking past real estate transactions between the company and his family.
Uchiyama's lawyer, Hiroyuki Kawai, told the same news conference that he believed the case represented a "foreign investor hijacking an honest Japanese manufacturer".
A representative for Oasis said the fund had no immediate comment.
Fujitec, a 75-year-old company, has previously said it believes the ultimate objective of Oasis was full management control, which Oasis denies.
Fujitec said in a separate statement on Tuesday that the board also decided to set up a third-party committee to investigate alleged attempts to intimidate director candidates ahead of the shareholder meeting.
