FX treads water as markets eye Fed, ECB

BUDAPEST, June 9 (Reuters) -Central European currencies were little changed in thin trade on Friday, as investors held off from making big moves ahead of U.S. Federal Reserve and European Central Bank's rate-setting meetings next week.
The Polish zloty EURPLN= was trading at 4.4715 against the euro, rising 0.1% on the day, with the Hungarian forint EURHUF= staying at 369.3 at 0854 GMT, up only 0.01%.
"We were stuck this whole week to a tight range in trading with the regional currencies as everyone eyed next week's Fed decision and refrained from opening new positions until then," a Budapest-based FX trader said.
Analysts polled by Reuters expect the Fed to leave rates on hold for the first time in well over a year at its June 13-14 meeting, while the ECB is seen hiking its key interest rates by 25 basis points on June 15 and again in July before pausing for the rest of the year.
The Czech crown EURCZK= was trading at 23.6420 versus the euro, up by 0.12%.
"The crown, following relatively weak figures from Europe and the United States, remains in a lightly defensive position, and that is despite losses in the U.S. dollar and the good performance of the stock market," bank CSOB said in a morning note, adding investors are likely waiting for fresh Czech inflation data.
The Czech inflation data is due on Monday, with analysts expecting an ease to 10.9% year-on-year in May from 12.7% in April.
However, central bank Vice-Governor Eva Zamrazilova expects inflation in the Czech Republic to fall to a rate below 10% already in June.
Inflation has been sitting in double digits for the past year in the region, but it is past the peak, prompting investors to see rate cuts this year, with Hungary already taking the first step cutting its key one-day deposit rate by 100 basis points to 17% in May.
