Raw sugar rises to highest in more than six years

NEW YORK/LONDON, March 31 (Reuters) -Raw sugar futures on ICE rose to the highest level in more than six years on Friday amid expectations for a tight global supply this year, while New York cocoa rose to the highest in two years.
SUGAR
* May raw sugar SBc1 settled up 0.29 cent, or 1.3%, at 22.25 cents per lb, after rising earlier to 22.36 cents/lb, the highest price since November 2016. The contract rose 6.9% in the week.
* "Downgraded harvest expectations in Brazil, India and Europe are driving supply concerns, while prices are also being supported by the continued diversion of sugarcane towards ethanol production in India," Fitch Solutions said.
* Broker Czarnikow on Friday revised downwards its projection for China production, saying it would be the lowest in seven years.
* May white sugar LSUc1 fell $0.40, or 0.1%, to $630.30 a tonne, just shy of the previous session's 10-1/2 year high of $634.80. It gained 5.5% in the week.
* Dealers said the availability of white sugar to tender against the May contract appeared limited after lower-than-expected crops in several countries.
COCOA
* May New York cocoa CCc1 rose $16, or 0.5%, to $2,933 a tonne, having peaked at $2,963 for the highest price since November 2020. The contract gained 2% in the week.
* Dealers said the market was supported by tight supplies, with port arrivals in top grower Ivory Coast running behind last season's pace.
* Ivory Coast has raised the guaranteed farmgate price it pays to cocoa farmers to 900 CFA francs ($1.50) per kilogram for the April to September mid-crop, up from 825 CFA francs last season, the government said.
* May London cocoa LCCc1 rose 29 pounds, or 1.4%, to 2,159 pounds per tonne.
COFFEE
* May robusta coffee LRCc1 fell $10, or 0.5%, to $2,206 a tonne as the market slipped further from a 6-1/2 month high of $2,250 set on Tuesday. It gained 2% in the week.
* The market has been supported by a pick-up in demand as some roasters increase the proportion of cheaper robusta in blends while shipments from top robusta producer Vietnam are running behind last season's pace.
* May arabica coffee KCc1 rose 0.7 cent, or 0.4%, to $1.705 per lb, but ended the week with a 4.9% loss.
