Prices trade largely sideways amid healthy storage buffer
March 30 (Reuters) -British and Dutch wholesale gas prices were trading largely sideways on Thursday morning, as well-filled storages continue to offset the impact of French LNG terminal strikes and colder weather, but downside remains limited.
The front-month contract at the Dutch TTF hub TRNLTTFMc1 was down by 0.15 euro at 42.85 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) by 0904 GMT, but traded as high as 44.10 euros/MWh earlier, according to Refinitiv Eikon data.
"We expect a largely neutral development today," analysts at Energi Danmark said in a morning note.
The recent reduction of liquefied natural gas supplies to Europe due to the strike in France would be very critical for the market, had it not been for the very well-filled storages across the continent, they added.
Gas storages across Europe were last seen 55.7% full, their highest level for this time of year since 2011, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe.
Still, a fresh bout of cold weather has raised concerns over demand and any extension of the heating season could add pressure to the market, said Daniel Hynes, senior commodity strategist at ANZ bank in a morning report.
"There are also signs that low prices have induced high gas consumption in the industrial sector," he added.
Temperatures in north-west Europe are forecast to fall below normal from Saturday, Refinitiv data showed.
Gas prices of around 40 euros/MWh at present were too low, analyst Ole Hvalbue at Swedish bank SEB said in his latest research report.
"A price of 60-75 euros/MWh probably is needed in 2023 to keep demand subdued, LNG imports high, and inventories elevated," he said.
Europe will need to match prices paid by Asian buyers, which also need to secure supplies for winter 2023/24, plus a premium in a bidding war to keep LNG imports flowing to the EU, Hvalbye added.
Further in, the British day-ahead price TRGBNBPD1 fell by 1.25 pence to 102.75 pence per therm and the within-day <TRGBNBPWKD > contract shed 3.00 pence to 103.00 p/therm.
Analysts at Refinitiv said they expected rangebound trading due to a lack of new events impacting supply.
In the European carbon market, the benchmark contract CFI2Zc1 inched up by 0.02 euros to 90.31 euros a tonne.
