EUROPEAN BANKS ARE 'SO BACK' SAYS GOLDMAN SACHS
The ECB's expected rates cut are not casting any shadow yet on European banks, which have delivered strong profits in the first quarter, benefiting from a restrictive monetary policy.
After breaking the decade-long spell of underperformance, banks are the best performing sector in Europe year-to-date, rising more than 20% and doubling the gains of the benchmark STOXX 600 .STOXX.
The sector's CET1 ratio, a measure of capital strength for European banks that compares core capital against risk-weighted assets, stands at 14%, with excess capital continuing to be returned to shareholders, strategists at Goldman Sachs (GS) said in a note.
However, the strong performance masks some dispersion under the surface, they pointed out.
Italian and Spanish banks, generally the most interest-sensitive, have been outperforming Nordic banks this year due to a stagnant macro environment, less generous capital returns and recent central bank cuts in Sweden.
More than one year has passed since the Credit Suisse and Silicon Valley Bank crisis, but no material after-shock has taken place with the cost of risk remaining low.
With inflation more under control compared to two years ago, central bank rate cut could slow down the banks' earnings, but GS believes they are "well-insulated".
"That said previous rallies have been prone to sharp reversals, we think a setback from here is more likely to be driven by sentiment unwinding rather than by fundamentals, which remain healthy", the broker added.
GS is constructive on buy-rated names such as BNP Paribas BNPP.PA, Santander SAN.MC, Deutsche Bank DBKGn.DE, Intesa Sanpaolo ISP.MI and UBS UBSG.S.
