Perth Mint's March gold sales hit lowest level in nearly half a decade
April 5 (Reuters) -Perth Mint's gold product sales in March dropped to their lowest level in nearly five years, pressured by a fall in demand as customers responded to rising prices, the refiner said on Friday.
Sales of gold coins and minted bars in March 2024 dipped 65% on a monthly basis to 16,442 ounces, their lowest since May 2019. It was down by nearly 80% compared to same period last year.
Sales of silver products last month stood at 860,672 ounces, down 15% on a monthly basis and 53% lower year-on-year.
The fall in demand for gold in March was aligned to the continued softening in bullion product sales globally as customers responded to the rising prices for precious metal investment products, said Neil Vance, Perth Mint's General Manager of Minted Products.
"Our silver minted products sales have held up more strongly but the softening in demand for silver also mirrors a global trend," Vance added.
Spot gold XAU= was up over 9% in March 2024 and hit a record high of $2,304.09 on Thursday. Silver XAG= was up over 10% last month. GOL/
